- On Thursday, April 1, SELS will be hosting its last general information meeting of the semester during which time ELECTIONS for the 2010 – 2011 executive officers will be held.  We will also hear from the SELS representatives who recently served as the school’s first-ever participants in the National Sports Law Moot Court Competition at Tulane University, and discuss whether this event and experience is viable and worthwhile for the club to continue to sponsor in future years.

- On Tuesday, April 13 at 1:00 pm, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, Mr. Gregory Fajt, will be visiting the law school to facilitate a thirty-minute presentation concerning casino and gambling related policies and procedures administered by the Pa. Gaming Board, and their legal implications.

- On Thursday, April 15 at 12:00 pm, Mr. Jared Leland, a founding member of the firm’s Entertainment Law Practice Area will speak about transactions involving the production, distribution, and financing of motion pictures and television programs as well as the acquisition and disposition of entertainment assets.  He will also touch upon the representation and negotiation work he conducts on behalf of actors, producers, directors, writers, distributors, publishers, entertainment executives, artists, and advertising agencies.

On Thursday, March 18 at 4:30 pm, Mr. Larry Lebowitz, a prominent attorney and immigration specialist at the firm of Cohen & Grigsby P.C., will offer a presentation detailing the numerous immigration issues faced by foreign athletes competing professionally in the United States.  Mr. Lebowitz has established himself as the region’s most respected sports immigration counsel and serves as a primary consultant for the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Furthermore, Mr. Lebowitz is a decorated graduate of Pitt Law and is currently employed as an adjunct professor by the school.

The Sport and Entertainment Law Society Executive Board would like to notify members and followers that the club opted to sponsor an “Angel Tree” candidate presented through a charity program facilitated by the Christian Legal Society.  With the club’s support, we were able to purchase a requested Pittsburgh Panthers sweatsuit, wool hat, and t-shirt for a 13 year-old boy who was noted as being a devout fan of Pitt Athletics.

We’re extremely excited for the upcoming semester as we have variety of functions planned; including a presentation from the University’s Director of Athletic Compliance, tentatively scheduled for mid-January.

We would also like to make note that we’ll be attempting to expand upon the newly created “Internship Directory” over the course of the next several weeks, so please check back periodically for updates.  If you have any questions concerning this project, do not hesitate to contact Club President Rocky Mosquera at mosquera.richard@gmail.com for further information.

Lastly, we would like to wish everyone the best of luck as they prepare for finals.  Thanks for helping to make the Fall 2009 Semester an absolute success.  Have a safe and happy holiday, and we look forward to the start of what’s destined to be another rousing year!

The Sports and Entertainment Law Society will host its next general information meeting on Thursday, November 12 at 12:30 in Room 111.

We’ll be collecting the $25 membership fee at this meeting and will also be distributing the new t-shirts.

Lunch will be served!  Look forward to seeing everyone there!

Next general information meeting to be held Thursday, October 8, at 1:00 pm.  Please bring your money for dues if you’re planning to officially register and receive a t-shirt!
